Labor Day 2012 Museum Activities

Welcome to the new Museum Stories website!  Along with a new look, I’ll be adding some new features about kids in museums, so stayed tuned. In the meantime, here are my picks for fun things to do at L.A. museums this Labor Day weekend:

FOR KIDS:

LACMA Family Days Labor Day (Monday, September 3) is a Target Free Holiday Monday at LACMA. This family event celebrates textile art from Panama with live music, tours, and art-making activities for all ages. Also at LACMA this weekend, there’s a free Andell Family Sunday (Sunday, September 2) exploring the artful geometry of Tony Smith’s large sculpture Smoke (see photo insert) with artist led-workshopsAnd don’t forget to check-out the kid-friendly sculptures Levitated Mass and Metropolis II (see post) while you’re there.

FOR EVERYONE:

Closing Exhibitions: Labor Day weekend is a perfect opportunity to see these great exhibitions before they close on Sunday, September 2: the Hammer’s Made in L.A.Herb Ritts (contains some nudity) at the Getty Center, Project Mah Jongg at the Skirball (see post).  On Monday, September 3rd the Geffen’s Ends of the Earth closes as well. I know it’s sad to see these shows close.  But don’t worry, there are some really interesting new exhibitions coming this fall like the Getty Villa’s The Last Days of Pompeii opening September 12. Can’t wait!

See you in the galleries,
Ro
