September 2011 Museum Kids Activities: New Monthly Calendar!

, , Leave a comment

Here it is! The Museum Stories Kids Activities Calendar for Fall 2011. Like our popular weekly Summer Calendar, it’s a comprehensive list of family events at L.A. art museums. The only difference is that it’s monthly instead of weekly. And that’s because museums offer fewer family programs during the school year. But don’t worry, the calendar still has plenty of educational, creative, and fun things to do in Los Angeles for kids.

September kids activities feature an eclectic mix of artful themes including pies, bird feeders, and lutes.  This weekend (September 17-18), LACMA will be hosting the third annual KCRW Good Food Pie Contest on Sunday.  They’ll be a pie judging contest, an apron fashion show, and an inedible pie-making family activity, and lots of pie to eat too!  Plus a sweet live soundtrack by Guest KCRW DJ Anne Litt (love her!).  Or, your kids can make their own gourd bird feeders at the Fowler Museum, or Vermeer lute-inspired string instruments at the Norton Simon.

Next weekend (September 24-25), the Hammer’s Family Flick is the (1938) classic “Bringing up Baby” — one of my all-time favorites.  I can’t wait to share this hilarious Gary Grant and Katheryn Hepburn comedy about a runaway tiger with my boys.  Check out the trailer and you’ll see why.  There’s also an artist-led workshop at the Hammer about the role of sketchbooks and journals in the artistic process for kids 8-12 years, and an art-making and storytelling activity about family portraits at the Norton Simon for all ages.

In addition to these special events, LACMA, the Skirball, and the Getty Museums offer great regularly scheduled weekend family activities which are also listed below. Always click on activity links for program details, and to confirm the date and time. And be sure to subscribe to this blog to get an email copy of this calendar every month.  Enjoy!
