In this month’s Museum Stories calendar, you’ll find over 3o listings of fun things to do with kids at L.A. art and cultural museums. November’s programs are all about the beauty of the autumn season, family gatherings, and the Thanksgiving holiday.
Thanksgiving is a great time to teach our children the importance of helping people who are less fortunate. My family and I will be participating in Santa Monica Museum of Art’s (SMMoA) Thanksgiving donation drive and art workshop Cause for Creativity on Sunday (11/6). Join us as we create decorative reusable bags from recycled t-shirts. Our bags will be used to deliver donated goods to homeless women at OPCC.
I love fall in Los Angeles and the way the autumn sun casts a warm golden hue over the city’s landscape. Explore the glorious colors of the season at the Getty Center Museum’s family drawing workshop Exploring Color (11/12), make abstract mosaics at the Norton Simon’s family workshop Creating Color with Light (11/19), or have an Alice in Wonderland inspired afternoon family tea (11/20) while enjoying the Huntington Gardens’ fall colors.
There are festive kids art classes offered this month at museums too. Kids (7-12 yrs) can make colorful pumpkin flower arrangements for the Thanksgiving table at The Huntington (11/19). Burgeoning young writers (8-13 yrs) can use their creativity to reconstruct a fanciful tale in the Hammer’s artist led workshop (11/13). And for teenagers, checkout the two-day printmaking workshop at the Norton Simon (11/5-11/6), and the digital photograph workshop at the Huntington (11/12 and/or 11/19).
Museums are closed Thanksgiving day, but they’re open over the long holiday weekend – several even have special family programs. The Norton Simon has a family (4-8 yrs) storytelling and art-making activity inspired by Van Gogh’s colorful Mulberry Tree on Sunday (11/27). Thanksgiving week the Getty Museum is offering daily Family Art Stops (11/22-11/27).
And guess what I just found out? The Kidspace Children’s Museum has a Holiday Camp (6-10 yrs.) the day after Thanksgiving (11/25). You can drop-off the kids for a half or full day of camp, and then head off to one of Pasadena’s cool destinations. Lunch at the Norton Simon Garden Café or holiday shopping in Old Town anyone?
However you choose to enjoy the fall season, I hope it’s a happy one. And if you like this calendar be sure to subscribe and share it with your friends.
See you in the galleries!
