Museums: Why don’t we go?

Okay, first of all, let me come clean.  Even though I love art museums and I’ve worked at art museums for many years, the truth is, I rarely take my kids to Los Angeles museums.

When my kids were babies and toddlers, we did go to LACMA or the Getty Museum. But that was when I could strap them into slings or strollers and guide them easily through the galleries.

As they grew and became boys with minds of their own, I slowly stopped taking them.  Now when I consider planning a museum outing, the vision of my two young boys running wild in the galleries, stops me dead in my tracks every time.

When I ask my friends why they don’t take their kids to museums more often (or at all), they say, “It’s a hassle.  And I don’t know where to go, or what do with my kids when we get there.”  At the same time, we all want to introduce our children to art and the museum experience — and yes, enjoy it.

Follow me on my new Museum Storie’s blog as I venture out into the L.A. museum scene.  I’ll go to the museums and do all the leg work — I’ll find out what’s happening, what cool things there are to see and do for kids and adults, and let you know how it goes.  Hopefully, we’ll all see more art, more often — and yes, enjoy it.
