L.A. Museum 2011 Summer Kids Activities Calendar: Week 6

We’re back from our family road trip to the California Eastern Sierras, and I can’t stop thinking about nature!  We traveled from the red-orange sunsets of the Mojave desert, to the emerald green bays and snow-capped mountains of Lake Tahoe.  I still can’t get over the beauty of our state’s summer landscape. That’s why my nature-inspired “Picks of the Week”  are all about getting out and enjoying summer gardens, free concerts, and bug catching activities (yes, I did get bitten by a few flying fiends).

Free family concerts at the Getty Museum and the Huntington top my list this weekend. The Getty Museum has free Garden Concerts for Kids every Saturday and Sunday in August — a great opportunity to bring a picnic, relax on the grass, and take in the beauty of the Getty Center’s Central Garden.  Or visit the Huntington on Sunday for a free Youth Concert.  Hear young musicians play contemporary and classical music in Friends’ Hall, and then explore the Huntington’s Children’s Garden which has plenty of great water features to cool-off the kids. For those of you in search of an art activity, check-out the Craft and Folk Art Museum’s (CAFAM) CRAFTlab “Containers for Bug Collectors.”  The whole family can make creative habitats for our backyard bugs and creepy crawlers.

Calendar Week of August 8-14: Orange highlighted program titles indicate special programs for this week only; or repeating programs that feature a new theme, performer, or movie each week/month.  All other program listings repeat daily/weekly throughout the summer.  Always click on activity links for program details, and to confirm the date and time. Museum schedules can, and do change, from time to time. And be sure to subscribe to this blog to get an email copy of this calendar every week.
